UK Driving Test: Content & Duration
The UK practical driving test assesses your ability to drive safely and legally. Here’s a full breakdown of what to expect:
Test Duration
Total Time: Around 40 minutes
Independent Driving: 20 minutes
Manoeuvres & General Driving: 20 minutes
Test Structure
Eyesight Check (1 minute)
- Read a car number plate from 20 metres (for new-style plates) or 20.5 metres (for older plates).
- Failing this = instant test failure.
‘Show Me, Tell Me’ Questions (2-5 minutes)
- “Tell me” question (before driving) – Explain how to check something (e.g., “Tell me how you check tyre pressure”).
- “Show me” question (while driving) – Demonstrate a function (e.g., “Show me how you turn on the wipers”).
General Driving (20 minutes)
- Drive through various road types (urban, rural, dual carriageways).
- Follow examiner instructions on turns, roundabouts, and junctions.
- Be assessed on mirror checks, lane discipline, speed control, and hazard awareness.
Manoeuvres (1 selected at random, 5 minutes)
One of these will be tested:
Parallel Parking – Park next to a car on the left.
Bay Parking (Forward or Reverse) – Park in a marked bay.
Pull Up on the Right – Stop, reverse two car lengths, rejoin traffic.
Independent Driving (20 minutes)
Two possible methods:
- Follow a Sat Nav (used in 80% of tests).
- Follow road signs (if no Sat Nav).
Tests your ability to navigate and make decisions independently.
How Many Mistakes Are Allowed?
- 15 Minor Faults (Driving Faults) – Small mistakes, e.g., forgetting to check mirrors once.
- 1 Serious or Dangerous Fault = Instant Fail – Examples: running a red light, cutting off a car, or dangerous hesitation.
Test End & Results
- The examiner tells you immediately if you passed or failed.
- You receive a detailed feedback sheet outlining your faults.
