How to Parallel Park During Your UK Driving Test
Parallel parking is one of the most common manoeuvres in the UK driving test. It requires precision, good control, and effective observation. Follow these steps to master it!
- Choosing the Right Spot
Your examiner will ask you to park behind a parked car on the left-hand side of the road.
Make sure there’s enough space to fit your car safely.
- Setting Up & Positioning
Stop Parallel to the Target Car – Leave about one metre (3 feet) gap between your car and the parked car.
Check Mirrors & Blind Spots – Look around for pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles.
Select Reverse Gear – Signal if necessary to show your intentions.
- Start Reversing Slowly
Turn the Steering Wheel One Full Turn Left – This angles your car toward the kerb.
Check Your Mirrors & Blind Spot – Look over your shoulder before moving.
Reverse Until Your Back Wheel is Level with the Other Car’s Back End
4.Straighten Up
Turn the Steering Wheel Back to the Centre – Continue reversing slowly.
Keep Checking Around – Watch out for pedestrians and approaching traffic.
5 .Final Adjustment into the Space
Turn the Wheel Right to Swing Your Front End In– This aligns the car with the kerb.
Stop When Parallel to the Kerb – Leave a safe gap (30-45cm) from the kerb.
Apply the Handbrake & Select Neutral – Indicate if necessary.
